What are the common misconceptions about preserving and caring for leather goods? Let's find out in this "How-to Series" with FRANK!

MISTAKE IN PRESERVING AND CARE OF LEATHER PRODUCTS 1: CLEANING

One of the most common mistakes in preserving and caring for leather goods is cleaning the item. Many people subjectively clean it by using soap, strong detergents... causing damage to the leather. In fact, leather goods only need to be cleaned simply with a soft cloth or clean soft tissue to wipe away the dirt on the surface. Then use a conditioner (same color or colorless) to moisturize and help the leather surface stay shiny and soft. Cleaning is one of the most important steps in preserving and caring for leather goods. If possible, you should equip yourself with a specialized leather care product set. This will help clean better, as well as prevent mold for the product. In case of new mold stains, they will be handled promptly. Avoid mold that is more difficult to handle the longer it is left. MISTAKE IN LEATHER CARE & PRESERVATION 2: COLOR FADING?

Leather is similar to fabric in that it will fade and discolor over time? This is only true for products made from low-quality leather! Or leather items that have been cleaned and stored incorrectly. Normally, products made from genuine cowhide will have relatively durable quality over time. Leather can be "drier" and dirtier (due to poor cleaning). But it rarely fades like other materials. Will leather products last over time? However, this also depends significantly on the use, cleaning, preservation and care of your leather products. Animal skin is similar to human skin. If exposed to sunlight or strong heat for a long time, the leather will easily become "dry, brittle, cracked". This will lead to the color of the leather no longer being guaranteed. And the physical properties and quality of the product have more or less changed. So don't forget to take care of your item 1-2 times/month. To ensure that the item is always as luxurious-high-quality-smooth as the first day!

MISTAKE 3 IN STORING AND CARE OF LEATHER PRODUCTS: WHERE TO PUT?

Where is the best place to store leather goods? Many people mistakenly think that the more tightly sealed the better, even putting the item in a nylon bag and tying it tightly. This seems to help keep dust and mold away from the item (especially in the humid weather of the North). But in reality... Another "regrettable" mistake in the preservation and care of leather goods. Natural animal skin has pores on the surface. Therefore, the leather also needs to "breathe". Leaving the product too tightly in a plastic box, nylon bag,... On the contrary, it prevents air from circulating, causing "steaming". And increases the risk of humidity, creating conditions for mold to grow. To preserve and care for leather goods well, you just need to leave the product:
  • Store in a dry, ventilated place (room temperature).
  • Avoid leaving leather items in places with high temperatures or exposed to humid environments.
  • When not in use, store in a dust bag. You can stuff PVP paper to keep the shape and 1-2 desiccant packets inside to prevent mold.

LEATHER CARE & PRESERVATION MISTAKE 4: SELF-REPAIR?

When an item breaks, should you fix it yourself at home? Actually, depending on the condition and problem of the item, you can still fix it yourself at home. However, FRANK does not recommend this. Why? Scroll down for more details! Repairing items at home? Don't be "foolish"! As you know, the skin of living animals has a "self-healing" mechanism. However, with dead animal skin, "self-healing" is impossible. Therefore, "all ignorance must pay the price". Leather, it can be said, is a rather "difficult" material. Any impact can "go a mile wrong". For example, leather is stained with long-term stains (such as grease, ballpoint pen ink, ...) if not handled properly, it is very difficult to save. Or products that are torn or scratched due to external impact or trying to cram too many items in... are also very difficult to restore to their original state. Therefore, it is best to contact experts, leather spas or brands for timely assistance. At FRANK, products are focused on the preservation and care of leather when:
  • 12 month warranty (on leather and accessories) from date of purchase.
  • Lifetime and free maintenance (for logo, edge painting, stitching, cleaning, product leather care).
